Birmingham City University's Pro Vice-Chancellor Professor David Maguire has criticised claims that 90% of research money should be limited to the country's top 25-30 universities.
His comment is in response to Michael Arthur, chair of the Russell Group of research-intensive universities, who believes that research spending should be limited to a handful of elite institutions.
Professor Arthur, who is Vice-Chancellor of the University of Leeds made his comments at a recent conference. The two Professors have debated the issue on BBC Radio 4's flagship news programme Today and it has been reported in The Telegraph and The Times Higher Education magazine.
