Birmingham City University students to produce live US election broadcast

Postgraduate students from Birmingham City University’s School of Media prepared an overnight broadcast for the results of the US presidential election between Donald Trump and Hillary Clinton.

Between 11pm GMT on Tuesday 8 November and 5am on Wednesday 9 November, the students broadcasted two TV shows from the University’s Parkside Building, as well as running a social media campaign and a live blog producing content throughout the night.

MA Online Journalism student Sam Gould from Solihull, said: “We’re really excited to be producing and staging the live broadcasts as part of an ongoing live blog on a topic which is attracting attention across the globe.

As the results came through on the night they discussed various topics and looked at reactions from social media. They also be reviewed key moments from the election campaign and asked whether the election mattered to Birmingham and the UK.

Over 20 postgraduate students were involved in the live broadcast, from courses MA International Broadcast Journalism, MA Social Media, MA Online Journalism, MA Television Production and PgDip Broadcast Journalism.
