Birmingham City University’s dedicated Clearing Centre is being backed this year by TV presenters Jonnie Irwin and Donal MacIntyre.

A team of more than 100 specially trained staff will be on hand from 8am this Thursday to answer calls from prospective students from around the country, to offer advice and guidance to those who are looking for a University course this Autumn.

The frontman of TV shows including Channel 4's 'A Place in the Sun' and the BBC's 'Escape to the Country', Leicester-born Jonnie Irwin graduated from the University of Central England (now Birmingham City University) in 1997 with a degree in BSc (Hons) Estate Management and enthuses about his time at university, recognising the importance of gaining a relevant qualification. He said: “I got so much more than just a degree from Birmingham City University. I got a vocational qualification, but I also got a channel into a new career. It was only at university that I realised what I wanted to specialise in and if I hadn't specialised in 'Agency' I certainly wouldn't be in front of a camera now."

“I feel it is so important that students get good quality and the correct advice once they get their results and the Birmingham City University helpline provides invaluable guidance to those who need it.”

Investigative Journalist and Visiting Birmingham City University Professor Donal MacIntyre added: “I am really pleased to be able to support Birmingham City University’s Clearing Centre. It’s a really stressful time when you get your exam results so having such useful advisers on the other end of a telephone is invaluable.

"It would have really benefitted me to know Birmingham City University’s Clearing Hotline was available to talk me through my options and courses available and so raising awareness of the helpline among prospective students is something I’m delighted to be a part of.”

The Birmingham City University Clearing Hotline will be staffed from 8am to 8pm on Thursday 14 August, and on Friday 15 August with reduced opening hours at the weekend.

Campus tours will be available for prospective students on Thursday 14 August and Friday 15 August at City North Campus, City Centre Campus and City South Campus. Prospective students interested in attending a tour must book in advance: Book a campus tour

In addition, the University will also be holding a dedicated Clearing Open Day on Saturday 16 August from 10am-2pm for which there is no need to register. Find out more information: Clearing Open Day
