Birmingham City Council awards local students for excellence

Birmingham students Peter Quinn, Dean Collins and Nilesh Pankhania are celebrating after winning awards for excellence from Birmingham City Council.

27 year-old Peter (below) won the Best Student Prize for when he was studying part-time for the HNC Construction at Birmingham City University. He is now completing the BSc Quantity Surveying degree.

30 year-old Dean is currently undertaking a Masters degree in Urban Design at Birmingham City University. He won his award for when he was undertaking the BSc Planning & Development degree. Dean's award was in the Management and Technology category.

While 32 year-old Nilesh is a graduate of the Architectural Technology degree. His award was for the best design project dissertation.

All three winners were presented with a framed certificate as well as £100 worth of shopping vouchers.

The award ceremony was held last week at Birmingham City University and was attended by key figures from across the city, including Councillor Neville Summerfield, Cabinet Member for Regeneration at Birmingham City Council.  The event celebrated an innovative partnership and commitment to collaborative working between Birmingham City University and Birmingham City Council that has taken shape throughout the past two years.

The awards highlighted the excellent standard of work achieved by students from the School of Property, Construction & Planning across projects, dissertations and technical application. 

Peter commented: "Being recognised for my efforts and hard work is extremely rewarding. My qualification will undoubtedly stand me in a good position while I progress with my future career."  Dean added: "It is nice to have three years of study acknowledged in this way.  The award will add to my credibility when I enter the jobs market."

"This degree represents a new career for me,  I've enjoyed the fresh challenge of re-training and embarking on my new career, and this award and recognition of my work has added further significance to my degree qualification" added Nilesh.

Richard Jordan, Director of Marketing and Recruitment at the School of Property, Construction & Planning at Birmingham City University, said: "The Urban Design Collaborative Partnership is an excellent example of the way in which the School works in partnership with industry in order to create a range of exciting awards to bring out the best in our students whether undergraduate or postgraduate."

"We are very excited at the developments in this partnership and are keen to see the positive impact that the fresh new talent will have with the experience and expertise of our team.  This is great news for the City" added Steve Vickers, General Manager of Urban Design at Birmingham City Council.
