Hosted by Birmingham School of the Built Environment (BSBE), a ‘BIM in Action’ event is to be held on Wednesday 4th July 2012, focusing on the University’s use of Building Information Modelling (BIM).

BIM is a digital representation of physical and functional characteristics of a building or structure and can provide a reliable basis for decisions to be made during a facility’s entire life cycle.

The ‘BIM in Action’ event, held at Birmingham City University’s Faculty of Technology, Engineering and the Environment, will look at the University’s engagement with BIM, particularly focusing on the delivery of the new Birmingham Institute of Art and Design (BIAD) building. In 2011 Birmingham City University appointed Willmott Dixon as the contractor on their £61.7m City Centre scheme.

‘BIM in Action’, co-hosted by The Chartered Institute of Building (CIOB), will include a closing plenary discussion and debate on how to achieve best practice when using BIM, as well as highlighting solutions to problems and considering the future potential of BIM, in light of the government’s BIM strategy.

Graham Rhodes, Head of Estates at Birmingham City University, said: “BIM is a revolutionary way of working that requires the precise combination of technology, skilled individuals and a willingness to work collaboratively together.

“Here at Birmingham City University we believe we have provided the appropriate forum for this to transpire at our City Centre campus development. BIM is a tool capable of advancing the construction industry, but it requires bold moves by firms to make the appropriate changes to realise these benefits.”

Speaking at ‘BIM in Action’ will be representatives from companies currently involved with using BIM on the BIAD project, including Willmott Dixon, Associated Architects, Ramboll, Faithful and Gould, Ove Arup and NG Bailey who are all actively engaged with the University’s City Centre campus development plans.

‘BIM in Action’ will be held at Birmingham City University’s Millennium Point campus on Wednesday 4th July from 2pm until 6pm. Tickets are priced at £25 for CIOB members and £30 for non-members, which can be purchased online.
