Birmingham School of Media runs best courses in the country

According to a national league table Birmingham City University provides the best practise-based media courses in the country.

The Guardian has released its annual university rankings and named Birmingham School of Media, which is part of Birmingham City University, as providing the best courses that combine teaching theory with practice. The Guardian's University Guide 2011 places the School of Media fifth in the country within the classification of Media Studies, Communications and Librarianship and is the only university in the top five that provides taught practical media courses. This year’s ranking is an increase of six places on last year’s position of 11th.

The table shows the School of Media received a very high score for student satisfaction with 95% of those questioned stating that they were happy with their course and 88% stating that they were pleased with the teaching they received. The School of Media also scored well for producing graduates who gained employment.

The table shows that the School of Media is the highest ranking in the country. Skillset Media Academies are a network of Government-accredited universities and colleges that work with industry in developing the new wave of media talent.

Head of School Philip Thickett said: "Once again it is great to see the excellent work of staff and students across the department recognised. The School has an international reputation for producing graduates who are not only able to hit the ground running but also have the intellectual strength to progress quickly in their careers.

"This is due in no small part to the work of teaching and support staff who come with huge experience of every part of the industry at every level, and an enthusiasm for preparing the next generation of media workers - not just by passing on the skills and knowledge that they have, but by anticipating and adapting to how the media industry is changing.

"We're now building on those very strong foundations with a range of postgraduate courses in areas ranging from Freelance Photography and Social Media to International Radio."
