BCU announces new senior leadership appointments as part of academic structure

Birmingham City University (BCU) is nearing the completion of its senior leadership recruitment, following the announcement of further permanent and interim Heads of Department in preparation for the launch of its new academic structure on 1 August.

The latest appointments include a strong mix of external recruits and internal talent, representing a wide range of expertise across the UK higher education sector and industry.

School of Nursing and Midwifery:

  • Dr Shona Green joins as Head of Department for Adult Nursing from Coventry University;
  • Alexandra Birch joins as Head of Department for Midwifery and Children’s Health from the University of Staffordshire;
  • Lisa Abbott, already at BCU, becomes Head of Department for Mental Health and Learning Disability Nursing.

School of Life and Health Sciences:

  • Liam McGrath, already at BCU, becomes Head of Department Life and Sport Sciences;
  • Michael Adams, a Registered General Nurse with more than 25 years of experience, joins as Head of Department for Health and Social Care Professions.

School of Architecture, Built Environment, Computing and Engineering:

  • Peter Baldwin joins as Head of Department for Architecture and Built Environment from Loughborough University;
  • Professor Abdullahi Ahmed joins as Head of Department for Engineering from Canterbury Christ Church University;
  • Professor Junaid Arshad, already at BCU, becomes Head of Department for Computer Science.

School of Law and Social Sciences:

  • Dr Fay Glendenning joins as Head of Department for Education from Coventry University;
  • Professor Duncan French joins as Interim Head of Department Law from the University of Lincoln;
  • Dr Donna Peacock joins as Interim Head of Department for Criminology and Sociology from the University of the West of Scotland;
  • Dr Sarah Wood, already at BCU, becomes Interim Head of Department for Psychology and Counselling.

School of Arts:

  • Dr Matthew Day joins as Head of Department for English and Media from the University of Derby;
  • Nathan Tromans, an experienced academic leader at BCU, becomes Head of Department for Art and Design;
  • Lee Lapthorne, already at BCU, becomes Interim Head of Department for Fashion and Jewellery.

Business School:

  • Tom Domboka, already at BCU, becomes Head of Department for Management, Business and Marketing;
  • Samantha Roberts, already at BCU, becomes Head of Department for Accountancy, Finance and Economics.

Vice-Chancellor Professor David Mba said: "It is hugely encouraging that our ambitious plans for the future have attracted such exceptional talent from across UK higher education. These appointments will drive innovation and help us deliver the skills our city and region need."
