Anti-Muslim hate crimes to increase after Brexit, says expert

Anti-Muslim hate crimes are likely to increase after trigger events such as the Paris attacks and the post-Brexit climate, according to research by a Birmingham City University expert.

Dr Imran Awan, Associate Professor and Deputy Director of the Centre for Applied Criminology, carried out the first ever national study to examine online and offline anti-Muslim hate crime. His latest research findings show that Muslim women in particular are more likely to suffer hate crimes because of their ‘visibility’ and Muslim identity.

On Monday evening (11 July), Channel 4’s award-winning investigative current affairs programme Dispatches investigates the rising tide of racism in post-Brexit Britain, revealing the scale of the abuse and uncovering dramatic recordings of physical and verbal attacks.  In this special edition after the Brexit vote, Dr Awan was invited to take part in the programme and provide his expertise regarding the rise in anti-Muslim hate crimes.
