Broadcast Journalism postgraduates finalists at Midlands Media Awards

Four postgraduates from Birmingham School of Media’s Broadcast Journalism course were finalists, with nominations in the categories of ‘TV Reporter of the Year’ and ‘Radio Journalist of the Year’, at this year’s Midlands Media Awards.

The event, on Thursday 15 March at Edgbaston cricket ground, was organised by the prestigious Birmingham Press Club and covered all areas of media including print, online and broadcast journalism across the East and West Midlands.

Birmingham City University were sponsors of the Online Journalism category, with the award being judged and presented by Senior Lecturer from the University’s School of Media, Sue Heseltine. Sue said: “The high quality of the entries shows the resilience and determination of our regional journalists and photographers to continue to produce good investigative and campaigning journalism and to continue to serve their communities at a very difficult time. We are delighted that Birmingham School of Media graduates were again included in the nominations”.

The Birmingham School of Media is a nationally respected showcase for creative talent and maintains excellent connections with local and national media providers including the BBC, Sky, Endemol, Maverick Television and Channel 4. Graduates Liz Copper from BBC Midlands Today, Laura Safe from Heart FM, Linzi Alder and Paul Bradbury from Touch FM all received award nominations.

Other guests in attendance included BBC Radio 5’s Peter Saull and BBC TV Political Correspondent Elizabeth Glinka, both graduates from the Broadcast Journalism course, as well as Rick Thompson, former senior editor of news with the BBC and Visiting Professor at the University.

Winners at the event included Wolverhampton’s Express and Star for Newspaper of the Year and Journalist of the Year was awarded to Coventry Telegraph’s Les Reid. A list of all nominees and winners can be found at www.birmingham-press-club.co.uk/media_awards.
