A group of media students from Birmingham City University have been out and about in Amsterdam, investigating how they ‘do media differently’.
The popular four-day study trip provided students with a fantastic opportunity to explore their media interests in another city, including a visit to online community radio station and international music platform; Red Light Radio.
During the visit, students were able to meet Station Manager Lieneke Weilhouwer who told the group about the station’s history and how it operates across a range of media platforms.
Second year student, Malgorzata Urbaniec took the opportunity to interview Weilhouwer and the information she collected will be used to support her practical media assignments.
She also interviewed one of the station’s DJ’s, Vanessa. Vanessa presents the stations Soundciety Show and provided Malgorzata with some helpful information.
“I was mainly interested in the music this station is playing but I also wanted to know how they ensure everything runs smoothly. I managed to get quite a bit of information which I will now incorporate into my practical media assignments. Going on this trip has provided me with the opportunity to write about things I have a genuine interest in.” She told us.
Lecturer in Radio Production, Neil Hollins was one of the three staff members to organise and go on the trip, along with Senior Lecturer in Public Relations, Philip Young and Associate Professor and Deputy Head of School, Sue Heseltine. Neil commented on the trip,
