Six business, law and social sciences students put their key employability skills into practice when they took part in the Emerald Forest business competition at Karlshochschule International University in Karlsruhe, Germany.

The competition takes international students from a range of Universities across the world, and places them into mixed teams. These teams then formed management teams bought in to rescue the fortunes of a simulated hotel.

Over the course of the week each team had to complete a number of practical and virtual tasks such as representing their brand at a trade fair, dealing with real-life moral panics such as housing refugees within the hotel, enhancing the hotels social media presence, and making financial decisions via an online platform.

The competition incorporated international lectures and guest speakers, aimed at improving the students adaptability, creativity, and business skills.

Birmingham City University students did very well across the competition. In fact, second year Accounting and Finance student Harry Llewellyn was part of the winning team, who were judged to have shown the best creativity and entrepreneurial skills. Of the competition, Harry said:

Sociology student Kerry Maxwell’s team finished as runners up. Fellow students Claudia Rea, Sara Gill, Deepika Kaur and Hazel Walker all performed well at the competition, earning the praise of the international coaches team throughout. The Business, Law and Social Sciences faculty are planning to bring this competition to Birmingham in November 2016.
