Since completing his degree at Birmingham City University, Nigel Hanson has not only enjoyed a very successful career as a lawyer but has also established the largest community-focused basketball club for young people in the country. He was recently named as one of the University's Alumni of the Year in recognition of his commitment to community engagement within the city.
Nigel set up Birmingham A's, a basketball club which aims to use sport as a tool for social change for young people living in deprived areas of Birmingham. The club's outreach programmes aim to deliver healthy lifestyles education in schools and develop the employability skills of its members.
Nigel was delighted to have received the award during the Faculty of Education, Law and Social Sciences' recent graduation ceremony and said: "It recognises what I have done for others rather than myself; although I never set out to get recognised for any of the work I do, it's very nice that I have been."
