Recent graduate of BA (Hons) Jewellery and Silversmithing - Design for Industry, Coco Liang, is the proud winner of the Goldsmiths Company New Designers Jewellery Award 2020 for her contemporary piece The ‘CONNECT’ Brooch.
Creativity, craftsmanship and community are at the heart of the Goldsmiths’ Centre and jewellers were invited to submit work on the theme of Community. Coco’s piece was designed to reflect the chaotic nature of 2020, inspired by the ideas of order, chaos and human interaction that this year has brought to the fore.
The judges praised her work, saying: “The ‘CONNECT’ brooch was strong and well-communicated. Coco translated this concept into a thoughtful piece of jewellery resulting in a design which demonstrates an equal awareness of function and the trend for customisation.”
Coco’s prize includes a week of work experience in a professional workshop at the Goldsmiths’ Centre with a £500 bursary and a place on the centre’s Getting Started course, a series of immersive business skills workshops.
Speaking about her win, Coco said:
Course Director for BA (Hons) Jewellery and Silversmithing - Design for Industry, Claire Price commented: “Coco joined the School of Jewellery last year from our partnership with George Brown College in Toronto. She has been an exceptional student who has worked so hard to achieve a really professional product range and we will watch her career progression with interest.”
