The Public Health course team at Birmingham City University have launched a campaign to raise awareness that 'public health is all around us'.
For the uninitiated, 'Public Health' conjures up thoughts of germs, Ebola and the dangers of smoking. As part of the September 2014 launch of BSc (Hons) Public Health, the course team is working with current and potential students to raise awareness of public health issues, showing how our own health status and lifestyle choices are strongly influenced by the wider environment.
Inspired by Mailman School of Public Health (University of Columbia), the Public Health team is adopting their poster/sticker campaign. Using smart phones, a range of social media, including Facebook and Twitter, students from Solihull Sixth Form College attended a Faculty Open Day and roamed the City South campus taking photos to illustrate their take on public health.
The output included the dyslexia friendly award sign; fruit, water and wholemeal sandwiches in the Students' Union shop; recycling facilities; public transport and shower facilities at the University (although students thought showers were provided for general hygiene purposes, rather than to encourage active travel to work).
