Edmund Bealby-Wright and Sophie Ward, students on the graduate writing course in the School of English, feature on the seven-strong shortlist for the 2010 Impress Prize for New Writers. The winner will be chosen by a panel of judges working in the book industry, and previous shortlisted titles have been published by MacMillan and Little, Brown.
Sophie Ward, who graduated with the Diploma in Writing in 2010, submitted an extract from her novel The Schoolhouse. Edmund Bealby’s shortlisted novel, This Farewell Symphony, is part of his Final Project – an extended piece of writing to be submitted for graduation in February 2011.
The graduate writing course is run in association with the National Academy of Writing. Richard Beard, the Director of the Academy, says: ‘It has been a pleasure to work with Sophie and Edmund as these two wonderful novels have taken shape. Both are extremely talented writers and the Impress Prize shortlisting is a valuable step towards the publication their writing deserves'.
