Year 12 students from St Augustine’s Catholic High School taking part in the Engineering Education Scheme

The School of Engineering, Design and Manufacturing Systems has hosted a team of Year 12 students from St Augustine’s Catholic High School who were taking part in the Engineering Education Scheme (EES).

EES links teams of students and their teacher with local companies to work on real, scientific, engineering and technological problems over a six-month period.

The group from St Augustine’s has been matched up with Thorlux Lighting. Their project was to produce a solution for Thorlux to provide lighting in off-grid remote areas, for clients in remote locations such as the Scottish Highlands or Dubai.

The session was led by Tom Jennings, Design Team Leader at Thorlux Lighting, who is a Birmingham City University graduate – gaining a BEng (Hons) Mechanical Engineering and MSc Mechanical Engineering during his time at the University.

EES aims to help students to start developing the skills and competencies required to be a successful engineering apprentice or graduate. Eighty-nine per cent of students go on to read engineering or associated degrees at university.
