Professor of Environmental Engineering Lynsey Melville has been named one of three runners-up in the inaugural David Middleton Sustainability Awards, which reflect excellence in the field of sustainable development.

Professor Melville was recognised for her work leading the Bioresource and Bioeconomy Research Group at the University, which is focused on accelerating the adoption of environmentally sustainable and commercially viable energy from biomass.

Established 2010, the group now works with over 40 international partners and has generated over £2 million in research income. It is based in two state-of-the-art laboratories at Millennium Point.

The awards were established in memory of sustainability champion David Middleton, by his friends and colleagues, after he passed away in May 2020. David helped launch the Midlands Environmental Business Club, was the CEO of the UK Branch of the World Business Council for Sustainable Development, and ran an annual sustainability conference in Birmingham.

Professor Melville said: “I am delighted to have been given this award. David Middleton made a huge contribution to the field of sustainability and climate change, bringing together key actors from across the West Midlands for over 25 years.

“It is a real honour to be recognised for the work I have done in the field of bioresources and bioenergy, and I look forward to continuing to work with the event organisers, Climate Change Solutions in the future.”
