Cisco Chief to receive University honour

An inspirational business leader who has been driving UK technology growth through entrepreneurship and STEM skills is to receive an honorary doctorate from Birmingham City University next week.

Phil Smith is the UK and Ireland Chief Executive of Cisco Systems - the world's largest maker of internet networking equipment.

Recently hailed by 'Computer Weekly' as one of the most influential people in UK IT, Phil is also chair of the UK Technology Strategy Board and Chair of e-Skills UK.

Phil has a 30-year track record within the ICT industry, advising leading global organisations in the private and public sector on how to drive transformation, productivity and sustainable growth.

Following on from Cisco's sponsorship of London 2012, Phil led Cisco's investment in helping to create a lasting legacy from the Olympics by providing a set of resources to support and nurture entrepreneurs and start-ups.

The British Innovation Gateway (BIG) aims to inspire a new generation of businesses and offer practical help, mentoring and advice, with the specific goal of accelerating innovation and growth and having a significant impact on the SME sector of the UK economy.

Phil, from Lanark in Scotland, said: "I am extremely honoured to be receiving this recognition from the University and appreciate the support from those who have made it possible."

Phil will receive his award at a Birmingham City University graduation ceremony on Thursday 4 September.
