Two sisters from Kingstanding in Birmingham have fought off international competition to be crowned with gold medals at the World Kickboxing and Karate Association Championships.
Sisters Samman and Susan Nasseri, both students at Birmingham City University, joined over 5,000 competitors from 93 countries at the four-day competition in Tuscany (Italy), last month.
Representing the England karate team in a squad of 13 members, the sibling-duo who were sponsored by the University, took away an impressive seven medals between themselves – bagging a gold medal each.
Final year Law student, Susan Nasseri, 20, came home with one gold medal and two bronze medals. She commented; “Winning wasn't what I had in mind, I simply wanted to go out there and do the best I could.
“Bringing back these medals to England is an honour. I feel privileged to have been able to successfully represent my country, my club and my university. I am extremely grateful to the University and the support they have provided to both me and my sister financially and also personally - it has meant a lot!”
Eighteen-year-old Samman Nasseri, a first year Electrical Engineering student, was equally as successful, returning with one gold medal, two silvers and a bronze medal.
