University hosts Handsworth Young People's Parliament

Executive Dean of the Faculty of Education, Law and Social Sciences, Professor Fiona Church, has presented the opening session of the Handsworth Young People's Parliament hosted here at Birmingham City University.

Pupils from schools in the wards of Handsworth Wood, Lozells, Soho and East Handsworth were invited to the University to examine and discuss issues in their local areas.

The Young People's Parliament has been in operation for 11 years and has over 30 member schools. The Parliament encourages young people to become active citizens within their local communities by enabling their opinions on important issues to be heard.

Professor Fiona Church said: "We firmly regard the Handsworth Young People's Parliament as part of the Birmingham City University community and welcome them each year to encourage educational ambition."
