A high-flying Birmingham City University graduate has been recognised for his creative use of Information and Computer Technology (ICT) in teaching at the recent Coventry Digital Creativity Awards.
Joseph Darnley, who graduated with a BA (Hons) in Primary Education in 2011, was presented with his award at an ‘Oscars’ style event at the Ricoh Arena after producing a video to help engage his pupils in solving a maths problem.
Over 1000 people attended the event, now in its third year, which saw pupils of all ages from across Coventry win awards for their creations. Categories included Film, Animation and Podcasts and Joseph was the first to win this year’s new ‘Teacher’ category.
Joseph’s winning video, which was made up in the style of popular television series ’60 Minute Makeover’, introduced the pupils to a problem whereby they were given a budget and had to furnish a room. He was presented with a glass star trophy jointly presented by John Dalziel, of the JD Show on Free Radio, and Head of Speech and Language Services, David Haley.
Joseph said: “I produce many short videos for many subjects across the curriculum in order to grasp the children’s attention and link their learning to real life scenarios and contexts.
“I have been attending ‘Creativity across the curriculum’ training in Coventry and wanted to showcase what I have learnt and how I embed the skills I have adopted into teaching and learning.”
Joseph currently teaches at Howes Primary School, who are no strangers to success at the Coventry Digital Creativity Awards; with the school winning an award every year since it began.
