One of the country's leading experts on graduate careers has visited the University to give his advice to students on gaining a top graduate role.

Steve Rook, author of The Graduate Career Guidebook, visited students from the School of Computing, Telecommunications and Networks (CTN) and spent the day providing them with top tips on how to improve their employability.

During the day, Steve visited a selection of final year classes and offering individual employability support to students from a stand at the front of the Faculty of Technology, Engineering and the Environment (TEE).

Steve spoke to staff and students from TEE and the Careers Service. During the talk, he laid out a six-step plan to get students, regardless of their current year of field of study, into a suitable career.

Dr Thomas Lancaster, Programme Leader for Computer Science, who organised the event, said: "Steve's talk really hit home with the students from CTN and complemented our existing employability focused teaching. Steve was very open with the students about his own life history, working around the world, and sharing the real-life examples he includes in his book.

"Steve also shared his idea for creating a valuable mobile application with the students, to enhance their CV and allow them to demonstrate their technical skills to employers."

Dr Martyn Ratcliffe, Placement Officer for TEE, added: "Steve provided a very interesting and informative view on employability. As Placement Officer, my role is to encourage students to work in industry for a year, and Steve's proven strategies will provide a sound base for them to secure a suitable placement."

The expert talk from Steve Rook is one example of how teaching provision within the School of CTN is focused around preparing students for the workplace.
