A Building Information Modelling (BIM) Champion awards event was arranged recently for computing, engineering and built environment students by Senior Lecturer in Digital Built Environment Mark Kelly.

The event took place in the Vice Chancellor's boardroom in the Curzon Building. There were 354 students on five courses – Architectural Technology, Building Surveying, Quantity Surveying and Construction Management – who were eligible for the prestigious BIM Champion awards.

New and existing students, and professionals were invited to see the innovative work from Built Environment students from the Integrated Digital Design courses, who were being recognised and celebrated for their excellent academic work, using digital BIM technology.

The aims of the award are to embed employability into the curriculum, celebrate student success in digital technology (Building Information Modelling), and raise awareness of sustainable construction and real-world sites and challenges.

Winners received an Oculus Rift Virtual Reality Headset for 3D modelling and a certificate from the Head of School, and those awarded highly commended received the latter.

Winner of the BIM Champion award, third-year Architectural Technology student Rhys Williams, said: “I am honoured to have been one of the winners for the first BIM Champion awards for my second-year work in the Integrated Digital Design Module. Huge thanks to my lecturers Elham Delzendeh and Mark Kelly for their support and guidance throughout the module. It’s also nice to see staff going out of their way to reward students for their hard work and working alongside prestigious companies like Autodesk to provide such excellent prizes.”

Mark Kelly said: “It is wonderful to see Built Environment students being recognised for their hard work. This student award embeds employability and sustainability into the curriculum, and celebrates student success in digital technology, and real-world challenges. Thank you to our sponsor Philipp Mueller (Autodesk EMEA Education), and the colleagues involved.”
