Claudia Carter, Associate Professor at Birmingham City University’s School of Engineering and the Built Environment, has been granted the prestigious status of Chartered Town Planner by the Royal Town Planning Institute (RTPI).
The experienced academic - a Reader in Environmental Governance – was awarded the membership following the completion of the rigorous RTPI’s ‘Experienced Practitioner Assessment of Professional Competence’ process.
Professor Carter has taught undergraduate and postgraduate planning students since joining Birmingham City University in 2011, and has been the University’s representative on the RTPI West Midlands Regional Activities Committee since 2015.
With experience of working on national and international research projects relating to environmental governance and planning over the past 20 years, the new RTPI member becomes part of Europe’s largest professional body for planners, with over 25,000 worldwide working in public, private, charitable and education sectors.
As well as promoting spatial planning, the Institute sets high standards for planning education and is the only body in the UK that accredits Chartered Town Planners.

Professor Claudia Carter said: “I am thrilled to have become a chartered member of the RTPI and I look forward to bringing further experience following the assessment to my teaching on the RTPI-accredited planning courses, as well as continuing planning-focused research, such as Participology, and my involvement with the regional RTPI body.”
Peter Larkham, Professor of Planning at BCU, said: ”We very much value our long-standing relationship with the Royal Town Planning Institute at national and regional level. Having more Chartered Members helps make that relationship work more effectively and at a deeper level, to the benefit of our students. It is a particular challenge to achieve Chartered membership as an academic rather than someone in day-to-day professional practice, and so Claudia's success is testament to her hard work and dedication, and reflects her ongoing engagement with the RTPI West Midlands regional activities. Last year the ‘Planning Game’ project which she led was awarded the Chair’s Award in recognition of the regional and national impact of the game to help future generations understand the work of planners and help attract young people into the profession.”
