Peter Larkham, Professor in the School of Engineering and the Built Environment, is celebrating the publication in December of ‘Authentic Reconstruction’, a new book of essays on architecture and the built environment.

The book, co-edited by Professor Larkham, examines the idea of the reconstruction of buildings which have been damaged by war or disaster and explores issues concerning heritage and the built environment. The essays by heritage specialists provide a wide range of case-studies and discussions which offer responses to crises and lessons learned, in order to develop guidelines for future actions by politicians, architects and planners in reconstructing buildings.

Speaking about the book, Professor Larkham said “Unfortunately, natural and man-made disasters continue to affect our heritage, and the examples from across Europe and North America covered in this book do demonstrate the range of ways of dealing with this. They show that people, and decision-makers, do need to be flexible – there is never any single ‘right answer.’”
