Product Design student Kenneth Lee of the Birmingham City University-accredited Hong Kong Design Institute has been presented with the Eden Project Award and £1,250 for his entry, ‘50/50’, submitted as part of the global RSA Student Design Awards 2015/16.

Lunch, winners’ reception and awards ceremony

All of this year's award winners were invited to a lunch, winners’ reception and awards ceremony, which took place on Monday 20 June at the RSA Headquarters in London. Past RSA award-winner Richard Clarke, now Global Vice President of Advanced Innovation at Nike, provided the keynote talk at the evening awards ceremony and also hosted the private afternoon workshop with this year’s winners.

The product

50/50 is a biodegradable container designed to help amateur farmers to carry their crops by hand. The conical container is made from areca leaf which is durable, environmentally friendly, and absorbs moisture to keep produce fresh for longer. Kenneth Lee said:

The RSA brief

The product was submitted by Kenneth in response to the Project Rural brief, requiring students to design a product, system or campaign that is specifically intended to help people and communities in rural areas to flourish.

The Project Rural brief also saw one other winning product submitted by Sam Troop of Loughborough University, entitled ‘Eco-Grill’: a safe, efficient and sustainable portable cooker that responds to problems arising from barbecuing in the New Forest.

Images and descriptions of all 2016 winning and commended projects can be found online in the RSA Showcase.
