Landscape Architecture PhD student Anastasia Nikologianni has hailed her trip to the ninth International Biennial of Landscape Architecture as an “incredible experience”.
The 2016 Biennial attracted over 800 delegates and took place in Barcelona between Thursday 29 September and Saturday 1 October in a bid to spread awareness, seek interaction with citizens and develop the urban landscape in the city.
Tomorrow Landscapes
A wide range of events, talks, exhibitions and technical visits were set throughout the days of the event themed around ‘Tomorrow Landscapes’ to celebrate the landscape architecture profession and introduce new ideas and visions. Anastasia said:
#PopUpGreen
The preceding event ‘Pop Up Green’ took place on Wednesday 28 September in the heart of Barcelona city, where 8000 small aromatic plants populated the Plaça Nova as part of the installation encouraging citizens to plant in other parts of the city, developed by the Biennial in collaboration with Barcelona City Council. Anastasia added:
“Having the opportunity to participate in such an international event was an incredible experience. Especially #PopUpGreen, this has been one of the most enjoyable activities among similar conferences.
“It not only gave locals and visitors the opportunity to explore the city, but it made us create a vision for the future of the urban landscape. People were wandering around the city, identifying the ideal location for a plant or defining where they wanted to see a park. It was amazing!”
Rosa Barba International Landscape Prize
The schedule included events such as the Rosa Barba International Landscape Prize as well as many “valuable presentations” under this year’s theme, covering topics such as climate change, globalisation, and the impact that landscape design has on lifestyles.
Ten nominated designers presented concepts and ideas on their schemes and explained the narrative behind their decisions. Anastasia added:
“As a landscape architect I feel privileged to be able to meet such important people in the context of the profession and have the opportunity to discuss the decisions behind their projects with them and how these maintain a sustainable landscape.”
