Kevin Singh, Head of Birmingham School of Architecture, has been conferred with the title Professor of Architecture by Birmingham City University.
Kevin’s professorship was conferred under the categories Learning and Teaching and Academic Leadership, having introduced a number of initiatives linking to industry and for his outstanding achievements during his time at the University.
Professor Singh’s relationship with the University began in 1988 when he joined the School of Architecture as a student. After qualifying he ran the BA (Hons) Interior Design course at what was UCE (now Birmingham City University) and simultaneously co-founded a design-led practice, the space studio, in 2000 with an ex interior design student Tony Kerby. In 2003 he took on the role of Course Director for the Part 2 course at the School of Architecture before being appointed Head of the school in 2011.
He is actively involved with the RIBA at both a regional and national level and is a member of the Executive Committee of the Commonwealth Association of Architects and an external examiner at the University of Nottingham. His research interests and activities include a JISC funded project for a national drawing archive and an approved book proposal, entitled “Design Agents” which discusses the use of design drivers in architectural education.
Professor Singh said: “I am very proud to have achieved the status of Professor after somewhat humble academic beginnings on a BTEC Building Studies course. I could never have imagined starting as a Fresher in 1988 that one day I would be conferred as a Professor by the same Institution as well as having the privilege of leading its School of Architecture. I must say though without the hard work of the students I have taught and the support of colleagues and architects and practices I would not have achieved this.”
