Three BA (Hons) Product and Furniture Design graduates are celebrating after being nominated for the New Designers 2021 Awards.
New Designers is the UK’s leading graduate design show and the most important event for emerging designers. This year, the New Designers virtual event will take place from 30 June – 10 July offering a chance to discover and connect with more than 3,000 breakthrough talents. The exhibition continues to be a highly respected and successful platform for bringing together new design talent with industry and consumers, as well as awarding the annual New Designers Awards.
We are delighted that three graduates of Birmingham School of Architecture and Design have been nominated for the 2021 awards.
Katy Thompson has been nominated for her Zewadi chair (pictured above), a functional and educational furniture piece inspired by Katy’s experience of growing up in a predominately white town and by the black lives matter movement. The Zewadi chair explores hair-based discrimination and how design can celebrate black, afro, and textured hair.
Maya Zowada-Noise is nominated for her outdoor furniture installation, Nalu (pictured right), which aims to educate the public about the ever-growing issue of plastic pollution in our oceans, as well as encouraging social interaction. The seating is manufactured from a material which is made from 100% recycled ocean plastics and incorporates recycling bins for public use.
Dominik Bondicov is nominated for The Green Reset Project (pictured right) which aims to bring a new approach to emissions reduction. The project is a product line and service that helps urban areas to reduce their greenhouse emissions while monitoring air quality through real-time data on a mobile app.
The winners will be announced in a virtual ceremony on Wednesday 30 June, and we wish Katy, Maya and Dominik the best of luck!
