He has been teaching in Higher Education for three years here at BCU as well as Newman University Birmingham.

In this session, Leon Skerritt will give the following presentation, followed by an interactive Q&A.

Title: The societal impact of countering terrorism, political violence, and extremism

Abstract:

My PhD title is 'The state, the right, the problem?: Responding to the far right in Britain since 1945' which is an exploration of the societal impact of the states response to far-right extremism, terrorism and political violence. This mainly revolves around the concepts of societal security and securitisation as well as the gendered nature of countering extremism and terrorism. Using a multi-method approach, I will be using discourse, comparative and content analysis as well as digital ethnographies to develop a wide-ranging picture of the history of the far-right in Britain since 1945, the various legislative responses that the state have implemented in response to their actions, and the impact that they have had on society.

This seminar has now concluded but it is available on demand. If you find that you do not have access, you can email the research seminar series leader at mitchell.longan@bcu.ac.uk in order to gain access.
