Accessibility Statement

Accessibility Statement for the iBCU Application.

Scope and ownership

Birmingham City University is committed to making its application accessible, in accordance with the Public Sector Bodies (Websites and Mobile Applications) (No. 2) Accessibility Regulations 2018. This accessibility statement covers iBCU app.

Within this app you should be able to:

  • Zoom in up to 200%
  • The mobile application can be used without specific touchscreen or device manipulation gestures
  • Use the application without encountering any flashing, scrolling or moving text
  • Use the application through written text information, where colour and sound is not used solely to convey any information

This application is available on Android, Apple devices and as a Windows app (UWP).

Customising the application

AbilityNet has advice on making your device easier to use if you have a disability. This is an external site with suggestions to make your devices more accessible.

How accessible the iBCU app is:

We know some parts of this application are not fully accessible:

  • You cannot use pinch and expand to magnify the application content – the font size is set within the device settings and has been set with a minimum size and tested against smaller and large devices.
  • Navigate with an external keyboard on Android application. This is a limitation of the platform and we have this included within the roadmap for future development. The application can be used with a keyboard from the windows version of the app.

What to do if you can't access parts of the application

If you are unable to access content on our mobile application, we will try to provide alternative formats to mitigate this. We are unable to provide content in every available format but we will aim to try and make our content as accessible as possible based on your needs. We review our available formats on an annual basis and our next review will take place in September 2022.

Requesting an alternative format

If you require information in an alternative format, please contact our web team at ithelp@bcu.ac.uk, providing the following details:

  • The content required
  • The issues you are experiencing and what changes you require to the format
  • Your email will be acknowledged within three working days and we will provide a timescale for resolution.

Technical information about the iBCU app accessibility

Birmingham City University is committed to making its websites and applications accessible, in accordance with the Public Sector Bodies (Websites and Mobile Applications) (No. 2) Accessibility Regulations 2018.

This mobile application is partially compliant with the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) 2.1 AA standard, due to the non-compliances listed below.

The full guidelines are available at: Mobile Accessibility - How WCAG 2.0 (Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) 2.1 AA standard) apply to mobile applications.

Non accessible content

The following items to not comply with the WCAG 2.1 AA success criteria:

3.1 Keyboard Control for Touchscreen Devices (2.1.1 Keyboard (Level A))

  • Use of external physical keyboards. This is a limitation within the platform on Android and iOS versions. A keyboard accessible version is available with the UWP version of the application.

3.2 Touch Target Size and Spacing

  • Certain interactive elements due to their design do not have spacing between them – such as tab style navigation within sections. We have made these elements as large as possible and tested against various devices.

Disproportionate burden

We are not currently claiming that any accessibility problems would be a disproportionate burden to fix.

Content that’s not within the scope of the accessibility regulations

At the time of writing, we are not aware of any content that is outside the scope of the accessibility statement.

Third Party Components

We have used software to help create the timetable section, we have made every effort to ensure this is accessible however there may be areas within this that are not. As this is third party software we will update this as soon as they have made any accessibility improvements.

What we’re doing to improve accessibility

We will continue to monitor user needs and feedback to maintain accessibility access.

Reviews

Monthly checks will take place to monitor the accessibility of our content. This accessibility statement will be reviewed and updated as appropriate but as a minimum there will be an annual review of this document.

Preparation of this accessibility statement

This statement was updated on 23rd November 2021.
