About the centre

The Elizabeth Bryan Multiple Births Centre (EBMBC) was established in 2017 through a partnership with the Multiple Births Foundation, a charity (founded in 1988) which has developed a national and international reputation for educating and advising healthcare professionals in the specialist needs of multiple birth families.

The EBMBC sits within the Centre for Social Care, Health and Related Research (C-SCHaRR) at BCU, and engages with the Schools of Nursing and Midwifery, Education and Social Work and Health Sciences. This positions the EBMBC to work across education, research and engage with a range of health and social care professional groups.

The vision of the EBMBC is to become an internationally renowned centre for excellence in education, practice and research into multiple pregnancy, birth and life course of families with multiples¹

¹Throughout this site‘multiple birth families’ is used to refer to families with twins, triplets and higher order multiples

Areas of activity

The four key aims of the EBMBC are to:

• Develop evidence based education and professional development programmes for health care and allied professionals involved in the care of multiple births
• Establish standards for education and professional development for health care and allied professionals
• Establish a dedicated research programme which will provide an evidence base for practice
• Support the provision of best quality care for babies, children and their families

Three work streams provide a framework for the structure of the activity to be undertaken. Projects will be organised under three work stream headings;

• Education; multiple birth module and continuing professional development opportunities
• Research; which will be applied in approach and may include evaluation and implementation approaches
• Practice; which will support new ways of working and quality improvement
