Dr Adam L. Kelly is a Senior Lecturer and Course Leader for BSc (Hons) Sports Coaching and Physical Education at Birmingham City University. Following seven years in an applied environment at Exeter City Football Club working as the Head of Academy Sport Science, Adam moved into the academic realm to facilitate his long-term desire of becoming a world-leading expert in sports psychology and coaching – more specifically researching athlete development in youth sport.
Alongside attaining his PhD from the University of Exeter, Adam’s professional and academic qualifications include Fellowship of the Higher Education Academy, British Association of Sport and Exercise Scientist and Chartered Scientist status, FA UEFA A Licence candidate, FA Advanced Youth Award, MSc Sport & Health Science, MSc Psychology, and BA (Hons) Football Studies. The unique capacity of practical familiarity and theoretical understanding has supported his existing knowledge translation in professional sport.
As an early career researcher, he is currently focusing on birth advantages and the relative age effect in youth sport, through actively collaborating with national and international partners in a number of professional sports clubs and national governing bodies such as football, rugby union, cricket, swimming, and squash. Interestingly, Adam is a former Professional Football Player for Salisbury City FC, whilst also possessing a wealth of previous playing experience with the likes of Weymouth FC, Poole Town FC, and Truro City FC at non-league level in England.
Adam currently works alongside a number of regional and national sports clubs and organisations, including Worcester Warriors RFC, Warwickshire CCC, City of Birmingham SC, Barford Tigers HC, England Squash, Wolverhampton Wanderers FC, Aston Villa FC, Shrewsbury Town FC, and Kidderminster Harriers FC. Adam also has an international research collaboration with the PLAYS Lab at Queen's University in Canada and is able to facilitate work-based learning trips with students and staff through this partnership. He was previously Head of Academy Sport Science at Exeter City Football Club and Academy Coach at West Bromwich Albion.
