BSc (Hons) Film Production Technology
When Josh Birch enrolled on a BSc (Hons) Film Production Technology course, he wasn’t sure of where the career path would take him. A year on after graduating, he has worked around the world and done some incredible filming.
“I chose Birmingham City University as I thought it was the best place to base myself to give myself the easiest access to different facilities across the UK. I started skiing when I was four and was competing professionally from my early teens, but during my studies I took a step back and became very enticed with filmmaking.
“After graduating, I wasn’t quite ready to commit to a full-time job, and this led to the decision of becoming a freelance filmmaker and videographer. Straight off the back of finishing my degree, I was fortunate enough to be offered a six month contract with Red Bull, filming one of their professional snowboarders. The job involved producing web episodes for Red Bull’s website, and it took me to locations including New Zealand, Australia, China and America.
“It was a fantastic experience and I definitely learnt a lot, which helped me going forward. I plan to stay self-employed, but I want to branch out from skiing and snowboarding and do some other videography projects, including making short films, with the long-term aim being fictional film.
