This course will address the specific challenges and opportunities of the luxury sector and is the perfect choice for students that see their future careers with premium, high-end and luxury brands.

We enable you to become a confident leader and an innovative thinker, learning how to approach brands and decide their place within the market. You’ll learn how luxury brands are managed in the international marketplace, as well as looking at branding from producer and consumer perspectives.

What's covered in the course?

The course encourages you to develop the skills and competences of future managers in the Luxury Industry. To do this, you will be capable of making management decisions at both a strategic and at a tactical level, emphasising the complexity and dynamics of business and management and an awareness of the nature of the various factors which influence management decisions.

The School provides a unique setting for students to observe their peers, taking advantage of the proximity of fashion and textile design students at the Parkside Campus and the School of Jewellery in Birmingham’s Jewellery Quarter.

The course encompasses numerous field trip opportunities so that you can reflect on your developing knowledge in relation to professional practice and the luxury industry.

There is commonality with other courses such Fashion Management, Luxury Jewellery Management and Global Media Management and you will benefit from shared lectures and practice where possible. Access to interactive digital technology will increase students’ ability to debate and share experiences in a global context and therefore integrate knowledge from different cultures.

An honours degree from a UK University

A first degree from an overseas university (GPA 3.0 out of 4.0 or average 75 per cent or any other equivalence to the above UK qualification)

Successful passing a Pre-Master's course approved by Birmingham City University

Successful passing a Pre-Master's course at another UK university/institution with a minimum of 55 per cent average

Show that you’ve researched the course offering. What is it about this particular course that appeals to you? Is it the lecturers? The modules? Etc.

What makes you a good postgraduate candidate?

Tutors want to know that you can handle postgraduate study, so show them how your undergraduate experiences or work life has equipped you for a more advanced level of study. Key areas to address are research and group work but this can vary depending on your chosen course.

Relevant academic or work experience

Add anything relevant that relates back to your chosen course and shows how your skills will contribute towards your learning. What extra-curricular activities have you taken part in? What awards have you won? What employment or voluntary experience do you have that has helped you develop transferable skills? How do these specifically relate to the course you are applying for?

You should also mention your future plans and how a postgraduate qualification fits in. Try to look beyond your postgraduate study – do you plan to jump straight into a specific career or follow your studies with a research degree? Lastly, use plain, professional English and, where possible, utilise the language of your chosen industry.

In order to complete this course you must successfully complete all the following CORE modules (totalling 180 credits):

Research and Professional Skills
20 credits

The aim of this module is to introduce you to research skills and methods to allow you to craft your own research proposal, which will support and inform your major project module. You will choose your own area of interest relating to your specialism for research.

Industry Practice and Context
20 credits

This module will introduce you to your specialist field, focusing on the key skills, issues and debates surrounding the creative industries and in your specialist field. Marketing and management theory will be put into the context of your specialism and relate to your growing awareness of the global nature of the creative industries.

Leadership Development - ADM
20 credits

Leadership permeates across all organisations and levels of society and this module provides focus on how leadership is relevant across the creative sector including arts, design and media. Developing effective and responsible leaders in the creative sector helps to promote and enhance creativity at both the individual and sectoral level, benefiting creative industries overall. This organic module examines contemporary issues relative to the leadership and management within the creative sector. These may include the functions and roles of leaders and aspects to lead to better decision making of managers, both from UK and international perspectives and delivered specifically for ADM students only.

Global Strategy Development
20 credits

Global Strategy Development module offers an introduction to strategy concepts and practice while exploring how to develop strategies for large corporations and small or medium sized businesses. These development suggestions need to be presented as a coherent plan for the future of the company. Such a project might be seen as a logical and step-by-step process, yet the academic and practice literature on this subject is divided on exactly what the process is and on what it should be. Some see the processes as conscious and planned sets of activities whereas the others view them as emergent, cultural, symbolic and political actions. Twenty-first century organisational activities requires managers to demonstrate a sound understanding of the dynamics of strategic analysis and implementation. Accordingly, this module explores business strategy in a global context through a rational approach to strategy as well as strategy as practice. Business modelling and the issue related to company growth are addressed, based on a rational analysis of external business environment and internal business situations.

Project Management - ADM
20 credits

Successful Project Management within the creative sector (e.g. arts, media, design, broadcasting, luxury goods, building design, etc.) is essential to take ideas from beginning to fruition, assisting with the operationalising of new innovation and smooth delivery of essential tasks. The project management module explores issues within the creative sector. It aims to present a research informed approach to enable the management of resources and decision-making in areas such as defining, planning, costing and reviewing large scale projects and will be delivered specifically for ADM students only.

International Strategic Planning for Luxury Brands
20 credits

This module has been designed to prepare you for a professional role in Luxury Brand Management by providing you with the tools, skills and knowledge needed to make strategic marketing decisions. You are invited to take the role of self-determined learner with the freedom to choose the luxury brand and market you want to focus on, developing your professional USP and aligning to your personal career aspirations.

Major Project (Masters)
60 credits

The purpose of the module is to enable you to undertake a sustained, in-depth and theoretically informed research project exploring an area that is of personal interest to you. It is important that we can support you appropriately, so you will be guided towards choosing a research topic which is relevant to your discipline and in which your lecturers have expertise. The outcome may take the form of a written dissertation or a practical outcome with accompanying reflective, critical and contextual material. The main consideration when choosing your topic is that it must be relevant to your programme and you should consider the relevance of this topic to your future academic or professional development.

Course Structure

Your studies will be based at Parkside and Curzon at the City Centre Campus. You will begin your year with modules in Industry Practice & Context, Global Business Strategy and Leadership Development which will introduce you to a range of skills and experience that will form the foundation of your further studies. You will have regular opportunities to meet experts from the world of Luxury and guest speakers from the wider Creative Industries.

In the second term you will build on your knowledge of Global Business Strategies and continue to enhance your industry skills in the International Strategic Planning for Luxury Brands module. This will also be supported with modules in Project Management and Research & Professional Skills, letting you practise making research proposals and designing pilot studies for industry related projects.

Your last term of studies will concentrate on a Major Project module that will examine a contemporary management issue that currently affects the Global Luxury Industry. This is a self-directed project that you can design to focus on aspects of the Fashion Industry that you are most interested in.

Barry Batson

MA Luxury Brand Management and MA Fashion Management Course Director

With over forty years’ experience in the industry, Barry is the current Course Director for MA Luxury Brand Management and MA Fashion Management.

Barry’s previous academic role was with Southampton Solent University as Senior Lecturer for their Fashion Management with Marketing & Fashion Buying courses. Prior to this Barry was living in Shanghai working a four year contract with Raffles Design Institute at Donghua University where he was a Senior Lecturer in Fashion Marketing and Management. During his time at Donghua, the areas Barry was responsible for delivering were; Fashion Buying for Retail, Product Development for Fashion, Ethical and Sustainable Fashion, Fashion Brand Management, Fashion Advertising, Fashion Communications and the Global Fashion Business.
