Overview

This course provides an introduction to the principles and practice of effective wound management, supporting healthcare professionals to develop confidence and competence in wound assessment and evidence-based clinical decision-making. It explores the principles of wound healing and wound bed preparation, alongside the recognition of factors that may delay or prevent healing.

Learners will develop knowledge and understanding of how to use patient history and assessment findings to inform an individualised wound management plan. The course also introduces the principles of dressing selection and appropriate clinical interventions, with consideration of the individual needs of the patient and their wound.

A key focus is recognising when wounds are not progressing as expected and identifying when escalation, specialist advice or multidisciplinary support is required. The course is designed for healthcare professionals involved in wound assessment and management across acute, community and specialist settings, supporting consistent, patient-centred and evidence-based wound care.

What's covered in this course?

The course covers the key principles and practical considerations involved in effective wound management. It identifies factors that influence healing. Learners will explore the principles of wound healing and wound bed preparation, developing an understanding of factors that can delay or prevent wound healing. The course considers how assessment findings can be used to develop an evidence-based and individualised wound management plan that reflects the patient’s needs and clinical presentation.

A key component of the course is understanding appropriate dressing selection and the role of different interventions within wound management. Learners will consider how dressing choices and clinical interventions can be applied appropriately to support effective wound care.
