Overview
Accurate wound assessment is fundamental to safe, effective and person-centred wound management. A wound cannot be assessed in isolation; it requires consideration of the individual, their health and wellbeing, underlying conditions, vascular status, environment and the characteristics of the wound itself. This course will develop practitioners’ knowledge, clinical reasoning and confidence in undertaking a comprehensive holistic wound assessment and using assessment findings to inform evidence-based decision-making.
Particular emphasis will be placed on recognising different tissue types, identifying factors that may delay or prevent healing, and distinguishing between wound colonisation and the clinical signs associated with local, spreading and systemic infection. Learners will be encouraged to critically evaluate assessment findings and apply recognised wound assessment frameworks to support appropriate clinical decisions. The course will also develop the ability to formulate and clearly document an accurate wound assessment, ensuring that assessment findings are communicated effectively and can be used to guide ongoing management and evaluation of care.
What's covered in this course?
The course provides an opportunity to develop knowledge and clinical skills in comprehensive wound assessment and the principles underpinning effective wound management. Learners will explore the assessment of different tissue types and develop a structured approach to assessing the patient, wound, vascular status and environmental factors that may influence healing.
The course will examine the identification of barriers to healing, including patient-related, wound-related and wider clinical factors. A key area of learning will be recognising the differences between wound colonisation, local infection, spreading infection and systemic infection, enabling practitioners to interpret clinical findings and identify when escalation or further assessment may be required.
Learners will also explore evidence-based wound assessment frameworks and how these can support clinical reasoning, decision-making, care planning and evaluation. Emphasis will be placed on translating theoretical knowledge into clinical practice and developing accurate, concise and meaningful wound documentation.
The course reflects Birmingham City University's practice-led approach, with a strong emphasis on evidence-based practice, critical thinking and applying current evidence and clinical guidance to patient care. It is designed to support practitioners in developing confidence and competence when assessing and managing patients with wounds across a range of clinical settings.
This course runs on Thursday 26 November 2026, from 9:30am - 3pm.
