Sharina Kamali
When Sharina Kamali lost her job as a support worker, she decided to pursue a new career in Social Work by taking the opportunity to go to University through Clearing. This is her story.
"Being unexpectedly unemployed gave me the push to research a degree in Social Work."
"I had the choice of going through clearing, which was a relief as I thought it was too late to apply. If I didn't apply through clearing I would have had to wait until the following September to start."
Breaking out of my comfort zone to embark on a new career
"After being in work for four years, you do get comfortable. I felt I was doing the right thing going back to education. It felt natural and normal because it was like a progression. I knew that going back to university meant a different career at the end of it. Applying through Clearing was really easy to do - it wasn't as difficult as I thought.
"I knew that Birmingham City University was my first choice. Many of my friends and family had attended and reiterated the support they received many times. The Social Work degree was appealing and it had everything I wanted. This was the full package.
Don't be nervous and stay positive
"Don't be nervous about getting on the phone - they will guide you and tell you exactly what to do.
"I think having a list ready and being organised is important. Stay positive and feel this is also an open door to success. Universities are really looking for passionate individuals that want to achieve their goals for their career path."
