For Danny, an apprenticeship offered the opportunity to combine academic learning with practical experience from the very beginning of his career. As a Trainee Quantity Surveyor at Quantem and a first-year Quantity Surveying apprentice at BCU, Danny is developing both the technical and professional skills needed to progress in the construction industry.
Actively engaging with his employer, Danny works alongside experienced quantity surveyors and contributing to live projects across different stages of the project lifecycle. He is gaining a valuable understanding of the industry while building his confidence and capability.
We caught up with Danny to reflect on his apprenticeship journey so far:
What skills has your apprenticeship helped you develop?
My apprenticeship has helped me develop a strong combination of both technical and soft skills. On the technical side, I have built competence in take-offs and measurement, as well as a solid understanding of legal and commercial aspects of construction.
In terms of soft skills, I have developed professionalism, effective communication, teamwork, and emerging leadership abilities by taking on more responsibility.
At Quantem, I am in the office on a regular basis or on site which has allowed me to naturally develop my soft skills through regular interaction with and learning from senior colleagues, communicating with contractors and clients. Technically, I have improved by supporting other quantity surveyors with a range of smaller tasks, which have gradually built my confidence and capability.
In recent months, I have been trusted to work on live projects on a consistent basis. Being involved from pre-contract through to post-contract stages has given me a full understanding of the project lifecycle. It has strengthened my overall construction knowledge, including legal, commercial, and project management aspects.
How has the support from your employer helped you to improve your knowledge, skills and behaviours?
My employer has played a significant role in my development by providing a supportive and approachable working environment where I feel comfortable asking questions and being inquisitive. This has allowed me to learn effectively through both guidance and practical experience. The opportunity to learn through trial and error, with support when needed, has been key to improving my confidence, skills, and professional behaviour.

How has BCU, including Academics, Tutors and Skills Coaches supported your apprenticeship journey?
My studies at BCU have helped me build strong theoretical knowledge, which underpins and supports the practical work I do in my role. This foundation has made it easier to understand the reasoning behind tasks and processes in the workplace. Additionally, the support from my skills coach has been valuable in consolidating my learning through regular progress reviews with my manager and tutor. These reviews highlight my progress and help me reflect on my development. Also setting SMART goals each quarter helps me stay focused, motivated, and clear about what I am working towards.
Was the apprenticeship the right choice for you?
Yes! The apprenticeship route although different to the usual university route, was the right choice for me because it allowed me gain practical, real-world experience while also developing my academic knowledge.
This combination has accelerated my learning and given me a clearer understanding of the industry, while also enabling me to build confidence and progress in my career.
What advice would you give to people thinking about applying for an apprenticeship?
Be proactive, stay organised, and take every opportunity to learn. Don’t be afraid to ask questions or take on new challenges, as an apprentice, it is a valuable chance to gain real experience and develop your skills.
