Becoming a Trainee Quantity Surveyor at Pulse Consult gave Dan the ability to build his career while continuing to develop his academic knowledge. Now in his first year of the Chartered Surveyor Apprenticeship at BCU, he is gaining hands-on experience alongside industry professionals, while developing the confidence, knowledge and skills to progress in the profession.
Taking on responsibility in cost planning and client relationships and learning from colleagues with decades of industry experience, Dan’s apprenticeship is helping him turn his ambitions into practical experience.
We spoke to with Dan to reflect on his apprenticeship journey:
What skills has your apprenticeship helped you develop?
Since starting my apprenticeship, I have been able to develop both my personal and professional skills. I am able to communicate better, become more independent and autonomous, and I have grown in confidence.
How has your apprenticeship helped you develop your skills?
I am surrounded by professionals, some of which have been in the industry for 30-40+ years. I have been able to watch, take feedback from and work alongside my colleagues which has built my own experience and benefitted my own skillset.
My employer has been very open and supportive, allowing me to take steps to develop myself during work. I have been afforded a lot of responsibility and opportunities which I have used to improve my knowledge, skills and behaviours. Whether that is through K14 cost planning, K9 client relationships or K7 construction technology.
How has BCU, including academics, tutors and skills coaches supported your apprenticeship journey?
BCU has allowed me to develop my theoretical knowledge while also interacting with peers in the industry. My Skills Coach provides support through guidance and advice on my apprenticeship and how to develop myself. Also, seminars and lectures help with the theoretical knowledge behind the tasks I complete in my day-to-day job role.
Was the apprenticeship the right choice for you, and why?
Yes, 100% it was the right choice for me. Personally, I have always been a person with ambitious goals. My apprenticeship has fast-tracked my career goals and allowed for continuous development. And as any other apprentice would also say, it is great to have no student debt and a salary!

What advice would you give to people thinking about applying for an apprenticeship?
It's a big commitment and very different to the full-time university route. If you are willing to put the effort in, stay committed and want to develop yourself I would 100% recommend you apply for an apprenticeship. However, if you aren't ready for consistent 9-5 hours (in some cases more) and aren't willing to put the effort in then an apprenticeship will not be for you.
Finding an apprenticeship can be hard for many people, use those around you, be confident when you meet people/get opportunities and persevere. If you have the opportunity of work experience, I recommend taking it, even if it's in your own time. Work experience will do wonders for your CV, give you an insight into the role and could also lead to a job at the same company.
