Following graduation in 1977, Francis held several positions in industry as a programmer and systems analyst specialising in applying Mathematical, Statistical and Operational Research techniques to business applications and problems.

In 1985 he returned to full-time education, taking an MSc in Robotics. He has worked at Birmingham City University and its predecessor organisations since 1987. Initially his role was an IT Adviser giving support to students, academics and other staff on their use of IT both as individuals and strategically at a faculty level. This included a Learning Support and training function helping students with their use of Mathematics, Statistics and IT.

At first Francis was employed by Computer Services (now CICT) but based in various departments (principally Engineering then Computing). From 1994 he was employed directly by the Faculty of Computing (then part of TEE, now CEBE and later Business School). Since 2010 he has held his current post in the Business School.

Over the years he has taught diverse subjects including Computer Programming, Artificial Intelligence, Auditing, Electrical Science and Quantitative Decision Making, as well as Mathematics and Statistics.

In 2003 Francis completed a part-time MA in Education which included research into problems in teaching mathematics to undergraduates and assessment in the teaching of programming languages.
