What is Strength and Conditioning?

Strength and conditioning is the application of various sport and exercise science disciplines to enhance physical performance. A common application of strength and conditioning principles is to enhance physical performance in sport and athletics such as sprinting, jumping, swimming, throwing, etc. However, the benefits of strength and conditioning extend far beyond sport. Anyone who is physically active can benefit from strength and conditioning training. For example, professions such as paramedics, firefighters, police, and military personnel depend on their physical condition to perform their duties safely and efficiently.

An important aspect of strength and conditioning is injury prevention. After all, even the most physically fit individuals cannot fulfil their duties or compete if they are injured. In the event of an injury, strength and conditioning coaches can programme and supervise rehabilitative exercises, alongside a Sports Therapist, to efficiently restore strength, muscle mass, and movement. Therefore, the expertise of a strength and conditioning coach is also valuable for outpatients and individuals with chronic conditions or disease who can benefit from exercise.

It may seem that a strength and conditioning coach is similar to a personal trainer or fitness instructor, but the key difference lies in their comprehensive understanding of exercise science. This detailed knowledge allows for unique insights and a more effective application of key training principles and therefore superior results. To be effective, strength and conditioning coaches must have a comprehensive understanding of Exercise Physiology, Biomechanics, and Psychology. These disciplines allow coaches to assess the physical demands of movements, evaluate exercise technique, monitor physiological responses to exercise (such as muscle growth, power development, and increased bone density), and understand how their interactions with athletes and clients can influence behaviour.
