Building a medal-winning athlete: The journey to peak performance

This August, Birmingham will welcome Europe's finest athletes as the city hosts the European Athletics Championships for the first time in the UK's history. As the Official University Partner of Birmingham 2026, we’re playing a key role in supporting the event while creating opportunities for students to gain real-world experience across sport, events, media and beyond.

But what does it take to build a medal-winning athlete? Behind every personal best and medal is a team of specialists working together to help athletes perform at their peak. From sports scientists and nutrition experts to coaches, educators and performance analysts, modern athletic success is built on collaboration. At BCU, our students train to support the next generation of athletes.

The science behind success

Elite athletes rely on more than natural talent. Understanding how the body responds to training, recovery and competition is crucial to unlocking performance gains. Our BSc (Hons) Sport and Exercise Science course explores the science that underpins athletic achievement; including physiology, biomechanics, psychology and nutrition.

Students learn how to analyse performance, prevent injury and help athletes optimise their training, using facilities based at the iconic Alexander Stadium, the very venue hosting this summer's Championships. Responsibilities can include monitoring an athlete's recovery, analysing running technique or understanding the psychological demands of competition.

Coaching the champions

Coaches are responsible for translating scientific knowledge into practical training programmes, helping athletes develop technical skills, confidence and resilience. Our BSc (Hons) Sports Coaching and Physical Education course prepares future coaches to work with athletes of all ages and abilities, developing the coaching, teaching and leadership skills needed to support sporting success.

You will explore coaching philosophy, athlete development and the wider social and cultural factors that influence participation and performance. At elite level, coaching is about helping athletes navigate setbacks, manage pressure and perform when it matters most.

Fuel, recovery and marginal gain

The difference between silver and gold can often come down to the smallest details. Nutrition strategies, recovery protocols, sleep quality and performance monitoring all contribute to an athlete's ability to consistently perform at their best. Today's high-performance environments rely on experts who understand how these factors interact.

Muscle recovery and maintenance is also a hugely important part of an athletes success. Our BSc (Hons) Sports Therapy course teaches you prevention, treatment, management and rehabilitation of musculoskeletal injuries, ensuring athletes can be confident they'll be at peak fitness and recovery.

By combining scientific knowledge with practical application, sport professionals can help athletes maximise every training session and competition opportunity.

Learning in the heart of major sporting events

One of the unique advantages of studying sport at BCU is the opportunity to learn within a city that continues to attract major international sporting events. The European Athletics Championships Birmingham 2026 will bring Europe's top athletes to Alexander Stadium from 10–16 August, showcasing world-class performance on a global stage. Through our partnership with the Championships, students will have access to volunteering opportunities, paid roles and industry-relevant experience that provides valuable insight into how major sporting events are delivered.

As well as Birmingham being the home to several world-class sports teams, we also hosted the 2022 Commonwealth Games, which has left a lasting legacy on the city.

More than medals

While the Championships will celebrate athletic excellence, they also highlight the ecosystem that supports success. Every athlete competing in Birmingham this summer will represent years of dedication from coaches, scientists, educators, practitioners and support staff.

Their achievements demonstrate the impact of teamwork, expertise and innovation in sport. For students considering a future in the industry, the message is clear: you don't have to stand on the podium to shape sporting success. Whether your passion lies in performance science, coaching, education or athlete support, there are countless opportunities to make a difference behind the scenes.
