Meet the Head of Computing

Professor Junaid Arshad is the permanent Head of Computing. Professor Arshad joined BCU in November 2020 after gaining his PhD from the University of Leeds, and working for the University of Westminster and the University of West London.

What is your academic and professional background prior to BCU?

I achieved PhD in Cyber Security from the University of Leeds, UK in 2011. During my PhD, I also contributed to different EU-funded projects as a Cyber Security Specialist, investigating and addressing cyber security challenges for different social science applications. After my PhD, I worked at the University of Westminster and the University of West London before joining BCU as Associate Professor in Cyber Security in January 2020.

What is your specialist area of interest? What have you been working on recently connected to this?

My area of specialism is Cyber Security. I am currently working on machine learning security where we are investigating different threats and how they affect cutting-edge machine learning algorithms.

Can you tell us a little about your journey at BCU?

I joined BCU as Associate Professor in January 2020 and was promoted to Professor in April 2024. During my time at BCU, I have led different academic teams and I was the Deputy Head of Computing in my most recent appointment. I have continued my research, have led different funded projects, and continuing to support PhD students.

What would you say has been one of your biggest career achievements to date?

My biggest achievement has been to support students and staff within the department to develop into a community where students feel supported, inspired, and confident to explore their ideas. Supporting our students develop their skills, take risks, and go on to do amazing things in computing is what makes me proud every day.

Why should students chose to study a Computing degree with us at BCU?

Studying Computing at BCU provides students far more than just technical skills — it’s about learning how to shape the future. Your degree will offer a strong foundation in your relevant subject such as AI, cybersecurity, and Games etc. but also develops creativity, problem-solving, and teamwork. Studying at BCU provides access to expert academics, cutting-edge facilities, and opportunities to work on real-world projects with industry partners. A BCU Computing degree opens doors to exciting, high-impact careers and gives students the flexibility to keep growing as technology evolves.

What is your vision for the future of the department?

My vision for the Department of Computing is to be a place where students can develop/apply technology to make a real difference. I want every student to feel supported to explore ideas, work with industry, and build skills that matter for the future. Together, we’ll create a community that’s innovative, inclusive, and ready to shape the world through computing.
