If you walk east from the stunning new Grand Central development in the heart of Birmingham, you discover another remarkable story of urban renaissance. Housed on a new campus with cutting-edge facilities, brilliant people and outstanding creativity, the Faculty of Arts, Design and Media at Birmingham City University one of the most inclusive arts educational institutions you’ll find anywhere.
Acting, Architecture, Art, Design, English, Fashion, Film, Games, Graphics, Illustration, Jewellery, Media, Music, Photography and Textiles – they’re all here. It’s not just a unique combination of subjects, but of methods as theory and practice, research, teaching and work experience enrich each other across our curriculum.
Partnerships are integral to what we do, and Birmingham is a city built on partnerships with an incredible range and depth of cultural provision. It’s a dynamic place to live and our Faculty is at the heart of many of its key developments. Our students’ work is seen in the city’s galleries, theatres, concert halls, festivals and even department stores. But it goes much further. We’re currently working with partners in Hong Kong and Thailand on joint exhibitions, live and online, and increasing opportunities for our students to study abroad and collaborate with others from different disciplines.
We believe that creativity thrives on careful nurturing and rich experience. The rewards are there to see. Last year our students won or were short-listed for no fewer than 28 national or international prizes. For individual achievement, that’s hard to beat.
I hope you enjoy what you read here, and feel inspired by the story of our Faculty. I’m proud to lead it and look forward to welcoming you here.
