How staff can use personal devices

BCU is legally responsible for managing and protecting the data it owns. To ensure the university is protected from risk of a major cyber attack or data breach, staff access to BCU services must be secured, as described in the UET-approved Mobile Device Management policy.

This page defines how staff can access BCU services from personal devices securely. ‘BCU services’ includes any applications or services that require a BCU login, such as Outlook, Teams, SharePoint, OneDrive, Microsoft 365 apps, and iCity.

The only exceptions to this are eduroam Wi-Fi on the BCU campus, the Multi-Factor Authenticator (MFA) app, and Virtual Desktops – you can still log into these services from any device.

Using laptops and computers

For staff who are entitled to a BCU-issued laptop

Staff who are entitled to a BCU-issued laptop will be provided with a laptop by IT. For these staff, you will not be able to access BCU services from any personal laptops or PCs.

For staff who are not entitled to a BCU-issued laptop

Staff who are not entitled to a BCU-issued laptop will need to use the Island Enterprise browser app to access BCU services. This applies to staff such as external examiners and visiting lecturers.

The Island Enterprise browser is an internet browser, similar to Google Chrome or Microsoft Edge, that can access BCU services securely. The Island browser app can be downloaded onto any personal Windows or Mac that meets our security requirements.

Staff will not be able to access BCU services from personal laptops or computers via any browser or app other than the Island Enterprise browser.

Using mobile phones and tablets

Staff can access BCU services from your personal mobile phones and tablets, provided you download and enrol into the Microsoft Intune Company Portal, and your device meets Microsoft’s security requirements.

Island Enterprise browser rollout

The controls described on this page have already been rolled out and applied to staff who are entitled to BCU-issued laptops.

The policy will be rolled out to staff who are not entitled to BCU-issued laptops in the academic year 2025/26. This will be done in batches.

During the rollout, affected staff will receive direct email communications to let you know:

  • the date on which you will gain access to download the Island Enterprise browser on PCs and laptops, and download the Microsoft Intune Company Portal on phones and tablets
  • the date on which access to BCU services from any other method will be removed for your account.

If you have received direct email communications asking you to download the Island Enterprise browser, and you already have a BCU-issued laptop, please get in touch with the project team at MDMPolicy@bcu.ac.uk.
