Sandra Hemmings has recently been employed at BCU as Assistant Lecturer in Social Work. Prior to her appointment Sandra worked in an alternative school with children from ages 11 to 18 years old and with pupils that are often on the peripheral of gang activities, county lines and known for other safeguarding concerns. The school also works with children that have an educational and health care plan in place. Sandra has successfully worked with children using a range of different therapeutic tools, such as role play and the use of dance and drama. As a qualified dance teacher, Sandra has used these tools to support service users/individuals to express themselves, whilst suffering from other forms of traumatic events such as PTSD and other adverse childhood experiences.

Sandra has previously worked with Baroness Lawrence of Clarendon and was a member of the committee of enquiry established to investigate a major murder case that exposed systemic issues within the police force and led to calls for reform and a greater focus on racial justice in the UK. The investigations led to the publication of the Macpherson Report, published in 1999.

Sandra has also worked as a Team Manager in different children social care settings, such as safeguarding and children with disability teams. Sandra is also a qualified Practice Educator supporting student social workers in placement.
