Gary Poynton is an experienced Lecturer in Education Studies, having taught across the full spectrum of the course since starting at BCU in 2019.

Gary’s teaching currently revolves around learning in post-compulsory settings, teaching in an increasingly digitised world, and performing ethical research in the fields of Childhood, Youth and Community. His lessons are designed in keeping with the principles of Paulo Freire; putting students at the centre of their own learning through discussions, simulations and roleplays, as well as modelling what work looks like in educational settings through a creative construction of work-focused activities.

Gary’s research interests put working-class learners at the forefront, focusing currently on how working-class football fans learn through their community ties. In addition, Gary has also published work on the notions of hybridised identities in academic spaces, and what academic staff members can do to help ease transitions for students from non-traditional backgrounds.

Outside of work, Gary enjoys football, coffee, video gaming, and travel.
