Course Leader

Welcome Message
Hello and a warm welcome to the MRes in Sustainable Engineering. You are now part of an academic community of students and staff engaged in education, research, and professional practice in engineering at Birmingham City University.
The MRes in Sustainable Engineering is a research-focused postgraduate programme designed to equip you with the advanced research skills, technical knowledge, and professional competencies required for careers in research, industry, and further doctoral study. The programme places strong emphasis on addressing real-world engineering challenges linked to sustainability, electrification, Net Zero, and clean technologies.
The course has been carefully structured to provide a rigorous research experience supported by specialist taught elements. Central to the programme is your independent research thesis, where you will investigate a topic aligned with your personal interests, professional background, or home country priorities. Your research will be closely aligned with UK and global industry needs, ensuring real-world relevance and strong employability outcomes. Alongside the thesis, you will study core and optional modules that develop your expertise in research methods, systems engineering, control engineering, and advanced dynamics, providing a strong technical foundation for your work.
The development of transferable skills is a core feature of the programme. Throughout your studies, you will strengthen your abilities in research design, critical analysis, academic writing, project management, and professional communication. You will work both independently and collaboratively, engage with academic supervisors and peers, meet demanding deadlines, and present your work through professional reports, presentations, and, where possible, publications. These experiences are designed to support your personal development and prepare you for advanced roles in research, innovation, and policy across key engineering sectors.
As Programme Leader, I along with my colleagues am delighted to welcome you to the MRes in Sustainable Engineering. We look forward to supporting you throughout your academic and professional journey.
