Welcome Message

Welcome to the BA (Hons) Sociology and Criminology with a Foundation Year course.

I would like to take this opportunity to welcome you to the foundation year of the BA (Hons) Sociology and Criminology programme at Birmingham City University and what I hope will be the beginning of a successful academic learning journey. This year has been designed to provide you with an introduction to the academic disciplines of Sociology and Criminology. In addition to this, you will have the opportunity, throughout the course of the year, to develop skills and abilities which are fundamental to successful undergraduate and postgraduate study as well as employment.

I encourage you to make the most of the forthcoming year and you will be expected to actively participate in all of the modules that you will study. This includes participation not only in scheduled learning and teaching activities but also in assessments. We have chosen a broad range of assessments throughout the foundation year. These have specifically been selected to help you prepare for the range of assessments that feature on the undergraduate social science courses which will become available to you upon successful completion of your foundation year.

In each module, there will be formative opportunities for you to test your performance prior to attempting your summative assessments. To support you in your successful completion of assessments throughout this foundation year, we encourage you to make the most of the feedback you will receive from your academic tutors and peers throughout each module.

As Course Leader, it is my role to ensure that you feel supported by our academic staff, and I will be available throughout the year to provide you with any additional information or advice that you may need.

I look forward to personally meeting each one of you over the next academic year. Best of luck with your studies!

Curzon Building, City Centre Campus (Room numbers start with C)

Supporting your transition

During Welcome Week, you’ll get to meet our Student Ambassadors as soon as you walk onto campus. They’ll be there to support you with finding your Student Support Centre, collecting your ID card and guiding you in the right direction, and for a friendly hello!

First day on Campus

We look forward to welcoming you to Birmingham City University!

You must have your ID card visible at all times when on campus, so if you have received yours before your first day, ensure you bring this with you. If you enrolled late you will need to collect one on campus during your first few days. Please remember that your ID card is for your use only. You must never let anyone else use it.

To complete your enrolment, you will need the following:

  • Passport (or other form of photo ID if you are a UK/EU student)
  • Original qualification documents if applicable (you will be emailed a list of the documents we need to see once you have completed your online enrolment)
  • Visa (international students only)

What else? The rest is up to you! You will find a shop, café, pub, computer access and water fountains on campus, but we do recommend you bring the following on the first day:

  • Laptop, if you have one
  • Notepad and pen
  • Reusable water bottle
  • Snack
  • Money

And remember, the weather in Birmingham can be changeable!
